Year 6 Transition Information

A huge welcome to Year 6 students and parents/carers who will be joining our academy in September 2020.

Let me introduce myself, I am Mrs Chambers and my role is the Learning Manager for Year 7. I am here to support you in making the transition to our academy as well as answer any questions your parents or carers may have. I hope that you have had the opportunity to visit our Outwood Academy Hemsworth for one of our amazing transition days. This year we have had a Space day, a Creative day and a Technology day attended by our local Primary Schools.

By now, your place at Outwood Academy Hemsworth will have been confirmed. If you have not yet applied, all is not lost. You still have time to apply for September 2020.

We have close links with all of our local Primary Schools and we meet regularly to ensure that your transition to Outwood Academy Hemsworth is as successful and stress free as possible.

You will be receiving letters through the post to confirm the key transition dates for this year and will all of the other information you may need. We have tried to cover all of the FAQs below however if you have any further questions then please get in touch.

I look forward to meeting you all soon,

Key Transition Dates

Full transition days: All year 6 students will spend two full days at Outwood Academy Hemsworth following a timetable of lessons and activities. The dates will be sent to your postal address indicated on the admissions form, alternatively all Primary Heads will have this information.

Year 6 Induction Evening: *Due to the Covid19 Pandemic forcing temporary school closure by the Government, we do not have a date for this to take place. We will add a date as soon as possible*. Parents, carers and students will have the chance to attend a presentation by the Principal, meet the Senior Leadership Team, spend time in a small group with a VMG mentor, enjoy refreshments and have your questions answered.

*Extra dates may be offered for children identified by their Primary School as in need of additional transition activities. Please speak to your child’s current headteacher if you feel this may be relevant for your child.

Frequently asked questions

Q. What date do students start in September?
A. The first day of term for year 7 is Tuesday 8th September 2020. There will only be Year 7 students and Post 16 students on site during this day so students can find their way around the campus whilst it is not busy. Staff will be available to support students during their first few weeks to ensure they know their way to lessons.

Q. What are the lunch time arrangements for year 7?
A. Year 7 is the only year group on lunch between 12.30pm and 1.00pm. This ensures minimal queuing time and allows them to eat and make new friends in their first year at the academy.

Q. How do you pay for lunch?
A. The academy operates a pay online system, where an account will be set up for each student. Parents can then use the online account to add money. Students on free school meals will have their money automatically added to their account for use at lunchtime. Log on details will be provided to parents in due course. All students are welcome to bring a packed lunch on days they choose.

Q. What are the rules for hair/ makeup/ jewellery?
A. Makeup worn by older students should be very discreet. Students will be asked to remove makeup if it is not discreet. Hair colours should be natural. Students will not be allowed into lessons with unnatural hair colour. Hair accessories should be discreet. No scarves or bandanas (unless for religious or medical reasons). No Jewellery is allowed except for a watch and medic alert bracelet or necklace. No body piercings including ear, nose, tongue and belly button etc, will be allowed. (Please arrange for any piercings to be done at the beginning of the summer break so they may then be removed in September.) No nail polish or false nails are allowed.

Q. What equipment will my child need?
A. Listed below are the items your child will be expected to bring into the academy every day.
Planner (this is provided by Outwood Academy Hemsworth on their 1st day in September)
Bag big enough to carry all essential equipment in.
